Sore throat

The published material is intended to allow quick access to general advice, suggestions and remedies that doctors and textbooks usually dispense for the treatment of Sore Throat; such indications should in no way replace the opinion of the attending physician or other health specialists in the sector who are treating the patient.

1

What is it ?

Sore throat – better defined as pharyngitis – is an infectious-inflammatory process that involves the pharynx. More often, sore throat also spreads to adjacent areas, thus compromising the nose, larynx and tonsils.

Pharyngitis causes pain and irritation to the mucous membrane of the throat, which worsens during coughing and swallowing.

Although it is closely related to flu and cold, sore throat can also occur independently of secondary pathologies.

Similar to influenza, sore throat is a very common discomfort among the world’s population and, despite being easily reversible, tends to recur several times throughout the year.

What to do and What not to do ?

Do this if you have a sore throat in Milano.

What to do:

To relieve local discomfort, apply emollient sprays several times a day: this remedy speeds up healing from a sore throat. Alternatively, you can take one or two teaspoons of honey a day, to take advantage of its soothing action on reddened mucous membranes
Rinse your throat with gargles (with antiseptic solutions, warm salt water or medicated mouthwashes with a disinfectant action). The indicative dose for salt water gargles is: 5 ml of salt (1 teaspoon) for 250 ml of water
Humidify the environment: it is recommended to keep the environment at the right humidity (40-60%)
Rest, both physical and vocal, is essential to promote the remission of symptoms in a short time
Drink plenty of fluids to ensure the right level of humidity in the throat and prevent dehydration
Cover the throat with a scarf, especially when going out in the cold.

Do not this if you have a sore throat in Milano.

What not to do:

Take antibiotics without a prescription: sore throat can be caused by a viral infection, consequently the administration of antibiotic drugs would be useless, ineffective and superfluous, if not even harmful to oneself and to others
Take milk and dairy products immediately after the administration of antibiotics such as tetracyclines: dairy products can inactivate the drug
Use anti-inflammatory drugs for a long time: this behavior can worsen the symptoms and make the pathogens more resistant to treatment
Smoke or breathing in secondhand smoke: cigarette smoke, just like smog, can further irritate the mucous membranes of the throat, increasing the pain
Giving aspirin to children under 12 years of age: this behavior can cause serious side effects, such as Reye’s syndrome, liver dysfunction and brain alterations.
Using the same towels/cutlery/glasses as people suffering from sore throats or flu-like illnesses to reduce the risk of contagion

What to eat and not to eat?

What to eat in Milan:

Drink plenty of fresh liquids: lemon juice diluted in cold water is particularly effective. The coolness of the water and the disinfectant action of the lemon provide immediate relief to an irritated throat
Drink warm milk mixed with honey: an ancient natural remedy, useful for providing immediate relief to irritated throat mucous membranes
Eat yogurt with live lactic ferments or probiotics: this way, the immune defenses are strengthened
Ice lollies, granitas and ice creams can provide relief (albeit temporary) to an irritated throat.

What not to eat:

Coffee and caffeinated drinks: it seems that these foods predispose patients suffering from colds and sore throats to dehydration
Spicy/mucosal irritating foods (e.g. pepper, chili pepper, curry, nutmeg)
Avoid eating foods that are difficult to digest, such as sauces, fried foods and foods rich in fats: this remedy is included in the list of rules dictated by nutritional education, therefore it should always be followed, regardless of the sore throat

Prevention

How to avoid all this in Milan

Always wash your hands thoroughly to reduce the risk of infection
Bring disinfectant wipes or specific liquid formulations (e.g. amuchina)
Avoid as much as possible any contact with people with the flu: even a sneeze or a cough are vehicles for the spread of the pathogens responsible for sore throat

5

Medical treatments

Remember that sore throat is a symptom that is common to many influenza and flu-like illnesses; therefore, in such circumstances, the disorder tends to regress in a short period of time without the need for specific medical treatments by always consulting a doctor Milan.
